Writers Hand

I've discovered a cure for writers block.

I haven't been able to type properly for months but had my carpal tunnel op last week so perhaps in another couple.

Of course I now have lots of writerly thoughts but they get lost with the slow tap, tap, taping of my left hand.

Wonder how many of you out there have had self inflicted injury from extreme writing? I am available to make comforting remarks in sympathy.

  1. Gosh, you poor soul. I didn't realise you'd been in so much trouble. I do try to be aware of how I sit and type (she says, correcting her posture quickly) not least because I've had a bout of RSI in the past. Hold on to those writerly thoughts and maybe invest in some voice recognition software? Here's wishing you a swift recovery.

  2. Ouch. I hope your wrist is back to writerly fitness soon.

I had a sore wrist for most of last week, but thankfully it seems a little better at the moment. Long may is last.

  3. Jeez, how awful!!! I do hope it gets better soon! My physiotherapist said the 6-month long bursitis in my shoulder was due to bad typing form, but I don't want to believe her. Though I did learn to touch type, just in case. Take care!

  4. Ouch, glad it's over and you're on the mend. It'll be a great interview story for writers news or somewhere. "Think you're working hard enough, well Fia had to have an operation, that's how hard she worked!"

My slipped disc was probably caused by too much sitting, but sadly I think most of the sitting wasn't due to excessive writing.

  6. Fia, I hope you'll be back to typewriterly fitness soon. I have more pain holding a pen than typing, except that I do get pretty severe neck pain, which is totally a postural thing, and end up feeling as if my head is going to fall off ... :)

  10. That's a pretty extreme form of procrastination madam!

I've had writer's arm and neck - got really stiff from sitting a certain way, pounding the keys for too long, but nothing that bad - carpal tunnel's no joke. Hope it's feeling better now :o)

  11. That's some very neat bandaging you have there.

I cross my legs. Worse than that, I catch myself doing that weird' double cross' thing (foot hooked around ankle) which is not good for the old circulation and varicose veins are not so fashionable nowadays.

Wishing you a super speedy recovery.

  12. I would have to say that staring at a comp all day and then when i get home does nothing for my eyes but I really can't complain seeing your pic.

I hope you make a speedy recovery, it sounds very frustrating. Maybe you could get a dictophone for all the thoughts. I record my ideas on my phone sometimes when an idea strikes.

  13. Oh no, that sounds very ouchy indeed. can you not type type with your toes? No? Gawd. No dedication, some people ;0)

Sending healing vibes and bad jokes X

  14. Chris - You take care out there too. You have to be fully fit for your new arrival:)

Debs - I know how much writing you do, so be careful of your wrist. Have you a good gel pad thingy?

SueG - Even saying what you had hurts. Do you find typing as good as handwriting for creativity?

Denise - Glad you're on the mend too. I kept thinking about those funny back to front chairs. Very swedish. They might help us.

Captain - That does indeed count. The only cure is Marmite crisps and beer.

JJ - I am far more worried about you. You're very brave out there.

Karen - It is and I am dragging out my convalesence. Fantastic news about your book.

Lane - It's cool isn't it? Proper plaster and all. I am always crossing legs, ankles and whoopsadaisies. Laptops are bad news for our backs too.

Spiral - Ha! Laughter is the best medicine so you are much missed on the NRs. I'll try and catch you on Facebook but the other day I left a message about Doctor Who on someone's comments about the election(by mistake). So embarrassing.

  18. Thanks Flowerpot. It's no better but nothing compared to serious illness so I will stop whinning.

  19. i have! and it may not be comparable to a serious illness, but it's debilitating nonetheless. i have had extreme tendonitis more than once and required physical therapy, huge amounts of Advil, and rest.

you need to rest, too. and soak your hands in the coldest water they can stand.
