Fish Publishing

I'm very happy that my flash fiction made it into this anthology, but sad that the patron, Frank McCourt, has died. Anglea's Ashes was such an unsentimental tale of the worse of times.

I've just finished When Will There be Good News by Kate Atkinson. It was so brilliant I can't read anything else for a while and Reggie, one of her main characters, is constantly on my mind when I should be thinking about my characters. However, one of them has been behaving badly. I spent six weeks getting to know him and he's let me down. I never believed other writers when they wrote about their creations going off on a limb, but this is exactly what he' s done. I thought teenage sons were bad enough.

  1. I just so know what you mean! I didn't know Frank McCourt had died. Angela's Ashes and 'Tis haunted me for a long time when I read them both.

  2. Congratulations on the publication of your flash fiction. I also loved Reggie - that was such a brilliant book.

PS Please say you're going on to next year's OU course. I've just read your comment on mine and left a few words there.

  3. Annie I loved Angela's Ashes. I can remember it so well and yet the film didn't have anything like the same impact. For me anyway.

ChrisH - I have signed up for next course. This time I am definitely sitting next to you.

  5. Well done on your flash fiction. You've got quite a few of these bits and pieces published now, if I'm not mistaken.

I like everything I've read by Kate Atkinson so far, with the exception of the short stories (Not the End of the World). For some reason they didn't grab me. The Jackson Brody series is great, though.

  6. Congratulations on your work being included in the anthology. I was also sorry to hear Frank McCourt had died, Angela's Ashes effected me deeply.

I haven't read When Will There Be Good News, but I really think I should do so.

I hope your characters start behaving again soon.

  9. I loved that Kate Atkinson book. Have you read the other two, both featuring Jackson Brodie? Genius.

Sounds like you've got a very naughty character on your hands missis - hope you can rein him in :o)

  11. Captain - I haven't read Not the End of The World. Must give it a whirl.

Debs - You must read it, but I know you have a big TBR pile. Why does that sound medical or rude?

Lianne - I will try and find Teacher Man. I'm married to one but another wouldn't hurt.

HelenH - You and Brodie? Damn, should have known you get there first.

Karen - Yes, I've read the other two. Love them also. My characters are bossing me around - just like teenagers.

Flowerpot - Thank you. My novel takes place at RAF St Mawgan (or rather nearby married quarters which have now closed so no danger of putting anyone at risk). It was fasinating to read your interview.
